Stream Bias

Why is Science the default and Arts the backup?

In countries like India, it has been noticed that the majority of students tend to choose the science stream after the 10th grade. Some students take this stream just for the approval they would get from society. Hence, this causes stream bias.

So now, what exactly is stream bias? Stream bias occurs when a particular stream is given more significance than other streams. In the case of India, this occurs with students who take the stream "science."

Since generations, we've been taught by our parents that either we would become an engineer or a doctor.

These occupations require science and technology as the main subjects, which further leads the students to take science as their stream. Streams like arts and commerce are seen as the streams chosen by students who don't do well.

Let's get to know the reasons behind "stream bias": The first reason will be the expectations of the parents and society. Parents tend to put a lot of pressure on the students preparing for competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET, etc., just by having high hopes and expectations. This causes the students to distract and creates pressure and stress on them.

Another reason for the same is the job opportunities. People who study humanities as a subject are more likely to have less career options. This has actually been going on since generations. This has forced some students to take science as a stream in order to get more career options.

In fact, many parents make their students take science stream for the same reason which adversely affects the mental health of the child.

The third reason for the same is the education system of India. The education system of India tends to focus on subjects like science and maths. This makes the mindset of the students that they were meant to study science their whole life. This makes the students confused and they are unable to recognize their own potential.

There are many more reasons as of why this happens, but it is important for us to know that the subjects we take can never decide our life. It is important for us to fix stream bias. It is important for us to realize that students have different interests and are unique in their own way.

We should fix stream bias. There are many ways to do the same such as by organizing workshops for the betterment of the students. Also, we need to make educational reforms in order for the students to realize their potential. At the end, we just need to make the students realize that parents can never decide their future. In fact, it is up to them whether to study a subject or not.
