For far too long, the LGBTQIA+ community has faced a paradoxical situation of being denied fundamental rights while being expected to conform to societal norms. This hypocrisy has deep-seated roots in traditional, often orthodox, values that persist in various cultures worldwide. Despite progress in many countries, discrimination, exclusion, and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals continue to persevere.
The paradox lies in allowing LGBTQIA+ people to exist while simultaneously denying them equal rights. Such as the recent case of the Supreme Court of India acknowledging that gay people have the right to love yet they did not grant the right to marriage. Why are people from this community being denied their basic rights? Another example may be the many countries that simply make it illegal for people to even love the same gender. Such contradictions reflect the struggle between evolving social attitudes and entrenched prejudices.
Education and open conversations are essential to bridge this gap, fostering empathy and acceptance for all. Understanding the intricacies of this issue is pivotal in dismantling the walls of discrimination and working towards a more inclusive and just society.
Violence against the LGBTQIA+ community is also a disturbing reality. Hate crimes ranging from verbal abuse to physical assault and even murder, target LGBTQIA+ individuals disproportionately. In some countries, laws that criminalize same-sex relationships perpetuate this violence, enabling authorities to prosecute and persecute the LGBTQIA+ community for simply being who they are.
The systemic discrimination and violence are stark reminders of the urgent need for change yet, people are not willing to give this community basic human rights as they are still stuck in their ancient ways. Advocates and allies worldwide continue to fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, working to dismantle oppressive systems and promote acceptance, equality, and justice for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity.
